Some people might want to know how fast ice melts in different liquids so that they will know about how long it will take to melt. You might need to know how long it take for like a recipe or something like that where you have to melt the ice and you might want to know how long it takes to do that. I decided to do this project because it is something I have wanted to know science I was little because I would put ice in my water and come back a little bit later and the ice would be gone. So I figured I would do a project to show how long it takes to do it. Also I figured I would do it in different liquids because I figured some of them would melt in different times because it must have chemicals and stuff in it and that would make it melt faster or slower so oi did that and got my results.

Some data that was collected during the project was what the ice looked like. The ice was at one point rounded. In the beginning the ice was like a rough oval shape..kind of like the bottom of your foot at one point it rounds in on the side and that is exactly what it looked like it rounded in on the side.

The results that I got were that the hot water had melted first. When you look at my background research it shows that things will melt faster when you have it a little warmer because of the ice being cold and the liquid being warm. Then after that melted the cold water melted and I figured that was going to happen because warm water melted first so then I thought oh you know the warm water melted so I am guessing the cold water would melt after. After the cold water melted the soda melted. I thought that was going to melt first because of the chemicals and all the sugar but then doing the research I found out that water was probably going to melt first and soda would probably come after that. The last thing that melted was the juice. I never really found out why that melted last or why it took so long because it took like 30 to 45 minutes to melt in the juice.
Conclusion
As a result for my project the data shows that the hot water melted the ice first. I think that the hot water melted the ice because the water is hot and the ice is cold so that would obviously melt the hot water first. Then after that the cold water melted the ice. I think that melted the ice because when u put an ice cube under cold water it melts pretty fast so I thought that was going to happen. Then the soda melted next I thought that was going to melt first but then I realized that the water was going to melt first because of how water melts under water itself...I thought that the soda was going to melt first because of all the sugar and chemicals in it but it didn't it melted 3rd. The last was juice.I used apple juice and it took a long time to melt.. I don't know why because I thought that it was going to go faster because it doesnt have as many chemicals as like soda and stuff.
Discussion
My experiment went just as planned. Well my hypothesis was wrong but everything else went right. My hypothesis was that the soda was going to melt first because of all the chemicals then the water then the juice but that didn't happen. What happened was that the hot water went first the cold water went second the soda went third and the juice went last. So i was right about the juice but nothing else. The good thing is that I was able to find the answer to my question and my variables went together. The thing that I could of done better with my experiment is that I could of done it more than two times just to see if everything was right because they were a couple seconds off so I just used the first data table that I made. Also I could of made it so that when I did the experiment it went better because at one point I had to time the other cups of liquid but when I had to stop the stopwatch the other ones continued melting so I didn't get the right thing until i found out i should do two stopwatches. One for getting the time when they have to stop and the other for timing the other cup when i am getting the time for the cup that has already melted.
Benefit to Community and/or Science
This benefits the community because some people may want to know How fast Ice melts in different liquids. When people have things like buffets and have to know when the ice melts in different liquids and how fast it melts and stuff they could like use that information and make a solution or something. That may sound wild but some people want to know how fast it melts in liquid because when you put ice in liquids it makes it more watery and then it taste different because it is watered down and some people don't like when that happens. Also now if u work at a restaurant you will now know what liquid takes the longest to melt ice and you might want to serve people that.
Background Research
As you suspect, the melting rate of an ice cube in a liquid depends partially on the liquid's density as well as its heat capacity. One would expect an ice cube to melt more quickly in a warm, dense liquid with high heat capacity as the liquid would be able to transfer more of its heat more rapidly to the ice cube, thus melting it. In beverages that are chilled, we are dealing with a complex thermal equilibrium process in which the surroundings first need to heat the chilled liquid which, in turn, needs to heat the ice cube. If the beverage is chilled, a denser liquid with a higher heat capacity would actually preserve the ice cube longer because the surroundings won't be able to warm up the dense liquid as quickly as they would be able to warm up a similar but less dense liquid. The question becomes more complicated when dealing with liquids other than water because we have to start considering solvation effects. Different liquids will be able to dissolve solid water with varying degrees of efficiency depending on their molecular structure. Generally speaking, liquids that can dissolve water very efficiently will melt the ice more rapidly while liquids that cannot dissolve water very efficiently will take longer to do so given that everything else remains the same. It is difficult, overall, to make generalizations based on this information because density, heat capacity, and salvation capability all affect one another in solution and complicate their effects on the ice cube.

So that is why the water melted first.
